
Alex Simmons is an award-winning director, producer and editor. His debut feature documentary, We Can Be Heroes, premiered at SXSW, where it won the Special Jury Award for Bravery and Empathy, and later took home the Audience Award at the Woodstock Film Festival.
A co-founder of Muck Media (Science Fair), Simmons has directed documentaries for Apple TV+ (Dear…), National Geographic (Trafficked with Mariana van Zeller), Univision (Chasing El Chapo), and Amazon (The Counterfeit Crimes Unit). His work has been nominated for Emmys and the Livingston Award for Young Journalists, and he is a recipient of the prestigious Overseas Press Club Award.
Simmons also wrote and directed the indie narrative Buddymoon, which won the Audience Award at Slamdance and was released theatrically by Orion Pictures.
Beyond film and TV, he has directed music videos and concert films for artists including Death Cab for Cutie, Sigur Rós, Flula Borg, and The Shins. He served as a producer on the upcoming Netflix documentary which chronicles global superstar Karol G and her record-breaking Mañana Será Bonito world tour.
Originally from Moscow, Idaho, Simmons now lives in California with his wife and son. When he's not behind the camera, he’s either coaxing his vintage Toyota Land Cruiser to life or pitching in relief for the Sliders of the LA Baseball Federation.
